Present
EBOLA! That is the talk around town these days. Every hospital in the United States is prepared for any case that comes their way, including ebola. As of mid- November 2014, Ebola is still occurring in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia. It has been isolated and treated in the United States but after the frantic research that has been done, it turns out there is no cure... yet. That does not mean there is not a chance for survival. Being treated at a hospital increases chances of survival but does not guarantee it.
Narrative
A trend that occurs is that America is mostly interested with medical epidemics that occur within the country. Ebola was never mentioned until a US citizen entered the country and was tested positive. The same has happened for other diseases. Once it becomes a problem for the United States, only then is it treated. Hopefully there will be change in the future and other countries will be healthier because of America.
Future
The future of medicine is bright. Things will just keep getting more advanced and better than before. It is predicted that drugs in the future might be tailored for each individual person and their genetic makeup. Pharmacogenomics is the study of how an individual's genetic inheritance affects the body's response to drugs. Another goal for the future is the SmartPill which is an ingestible capsule that can measure pressure, pH and temperature from in the GI tract and transmit the information to a data receiver that the patient wears. Scientists at Cornell University are already working on the next thing. They have grown mice embryos in man-made bubble shaped wombs. According to this recent experiment, artificial wombs are soon to come. This would allow the baby to grow outside the womb.
Narrative
For these goals to be accomplished America has to be willing to help. The economy needs to stay strong and technology is very important, but the most crucial part of the system is education. Students need to be willing to put forth the effort if they want the future to be bright and full of accomplishments. War can not occur. That will just side track everything because all the time will be put towards helping soldiers and keeping them alive. As long as the future presidents know what they are doing, everything will be okay.
Conclusion
Medicine is like a line of dominos. Once one thing happens that leads to the next. Except this line of dominos is never ending. There will always be something more to do in the medical field whether it be invent a new tool or cure a deadly disease. We have all been impacted and we should be thankful because what they are doing is not easy. It takes time and effort but without them, who knows where we would be at today.
